Semi-Rigid Rod Fracture of Wave Flex
Kim Soo-Beom

Abstract
Semi-rigid rod systems are used widely nowadays. Wave Flex, one of the semi-rigid rod systems, was developed to prevent adjacent segmental disease. A 60-year-old female patient received the first surgical posterior fusion from L3 to L5 at another hospital. Three years later, she visited our hospital complaining of lower back pain and both leg pain. She received an additional anterior lumbar interbody cage insertion and posterior fusion extension to S1 level. During the operation, wavy rods were applied at L3-4 level, and rigid rods at L4-5 and L5-S1 level. One year after this surgery, she returned, having suddenly developed lower back pain. Simple radiographs and computed tomographs showed a right rod fracture of the wavy portion without any other abnormal radiological evidence explaining the sudden lower back pain. To the best of our knowledge, the wavy rod fracture of this instrument has not yet been reported, hence this report.
